The Future is Niche
Digital revolutions often start with massive generalist platforms, such as Google and Facebook, and then filter down to niches, such as the Movie / Video search engine, IMBD or our homegrown social platform, Skillpages
One such speciality social media platform is Yammer which Microsoft Corp stands poised to buy for more than $1 billion.
Yammer was originally launched as a microblogging service for the workplace but has since evolved into a full enterprise social network service which is often likened to an enterprise version of Twitter or a Facebook for business. It is currently being used by more than 200,000 companies worldwide.
Microsoft missed the boat with Social Media, and this move is seen as a strategic incision into the market, in contrast to Google’s attempt to fully square up to Facebook with Google +
This represents a clever move by Microsoft as the crystal ball gazers agree on the fact that the online community is segmenting, and Yammer represents a very promising segment.
