YouTube Must Pay
So Google has finally decided on a means to de-egg the golden goose – a transparent and animated ad covering the lower one fifth of each video. It starts today.
Ok, it was a given that this site was going to be commercialised once 1.65 billion dollars was paid out for it, but such corporate intrusion is surely not going to sit well with users.
Google / YouTube states that the ads will be 80% transparent and will appear after 15 seconds of the clip has been played; running time: 10 seconds. Users can dismiss the ads just by clicking on them.
Google / YouTube might have opted for “pre-rolls†(running ads before the video) but that would have probably sent YouTube down the digital toilet - the online attention span being as narrow as a taxi driver’s mind.
To avoid a scenario where ads for Disney movies might be played over happy slapping videos, the new in-video format will only run on video from a selection of partners and not on any videos uploaded by individuals. Advertisers will be billed for each 1,000 overlays served to consumers.
