Not sure who to complain or give praise to on holidays? One of this year’s National Digital Research Centre Launchpad accelerator participants has developed a solution to many a holidaymaker’s and hotelier’s woes: a way to easily give instant feedback.

Instant Opinion, the brainchild of Aidan Kenny, claims to be the world’s first system for realtime collection of customer feedback.
It is initially focusing on the hospitality/hotel sector as people in this business understand the importance of customer service, Kenny explains.
Currently customers of hotels using Instant Opinion can text (for free) or email feedback. The duty manager assigned receives the message immediately and can act on it. This means the customer leaves happy rather than complaining in a feedback form or on an online forum days later.
Apps are in development but for the moment “we find SMS is a technology people are comfortable using,” says Kenny who also runs a service design company Servitize.
Instant Opinion was demonstrated at the recent Techovate conference as a means for delegates to ask questions – just one of its many potential uses.

Do you know the Irish for social media? Whether you’re a gaeilgeoir, learning Irish or one of the 100,000 people Bernard Dunne hopes will re-engage with the Irish language thanks to the ‘Bród Club’ campaign, you’ll be interested in Ireland’s newest social network.

At the core of Abair Leat! is the concept that posts and comments contain a minimum 70% Irish. The site’s custom-made software checks the percentage of Irish language content in all updates and posts to ensure users are communicating in Irish. Its 30% leeway allows for the necessity now and again to use non-standard spelling and non-Irish words.
Míchéal Ó Foighil, founder of Abair Leat! explains that the aim of the network, which also has integrated translation and spelling, is to help normalise the use of Gaeilge in casual, informal, social and everyday chit chat.
“It’s really important to enjoy playing with the language and not to worry about making mistakes.”

Dublin-based VenueOne.com, which has been shortlisted for an ITLG Irish Times Innovation Award is an ‘online venue’ where users can watch gigs.
The main difference between VenueOne.com and similar sites, says Head of Editorial at VenueOne.com Aaron Rogan is the site’s “social functionality” which is currently in beta.
Users can create their own YouTube party, search YouTube, create playlists and invite friends from Facebook, Twitter, or share the ‘YouTube Party’ link any other way. Once signed into VenueOne.com they can all chat online.
Tune at 8pm on Tuesday, 28 February for the first in a new interactive series with Dave Fanning. Fanning will take viewers through the career of Kasabian. Looking for a live gig? Put the Meteor Choice Music Prize on 8 March into your diary or check out a live Brits award themed party on VenueOne.com.

As the first Measurement conference approaches, we asked founder Damien Mulley whether Irish companies investing in social media put enough thought into measuring returns.

“They’re starting to. I think for a while social was a discretionary/experimental thing with zero or hardly any budget. As it is becoming a main part of comms and marketing, proper measurements are needed for both a return but also a reassurance you’re getting it right.
Social media measurement, says Mulley, “turns ‘we have lots of fans on Facebook and I’m sure they’ll think of us when next they buy bread’ to ‘25-35 year olds love our product and are forever telling their friends who in total number in the 100s of 1000s and are 60% female, from the voucher we used we say a 5% sales bump thanks to Facebook’.”
Tomorrow (Wednesday) the first Measurement conference takes place and is sold out. “DoneDeal.ie and myself wanted to do an event together sometime, this seemed right,” explains Mulley. (Note: the hashtag to follow is #DoneDealsocial.) The topic itself is becoming more and more frequently asked for by my own clients and the main winners of the Social Media Awards last year had been doing this so I felt it was the right time to give the wider community a chance to see the benefits of it.
Indeed the timing is good, with the date for the 2012 Social Media Awards just announced: mark 17 May 2012 in the diaries!

Social events company Have the Craic has re-launched with a newly designed website and business strategy.
The firm, which was set up in 2009, has redeveloped its website, havethecraic.com, based on customer feedback.

Elaine Walsh, managing director, said: “We initially launched the site as a social network but with big players in the market such as Facebook we needed to relook at where our strengths lie.
“We have come back to the core of what we do, which is an events company. Really we exist for people to meet in person.”
Designed by Maddog Digital, the new site includes an improved booking system for customers. It makes it easier for customers to interact with each other and the events organiser.
The firm organises everything from student to corporate events, from outdoor activities to theatre nights.
Walsh said the majority of clients are busy executives who don’t have time to organise social events.

“As it isn’t a paid role at this time, we plan to offer as many benefits as we can, like structured personal development via webinars, help with NUJ membership and we will reward those who contribute most with share options in the company,” according to Mike White, founder of Studenty.me.
“The plan for Studenty.me is that the commercial division will support the overall social responsibility that the business wishes to contribute to, such as offering aspiring journalists, podcasters and news presenters, entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs an island-wide platform for their work.”

The news, which was broken early Monday morning with a tweet by @IDAIRELAND, simply said: “Ireland is trending. Twitter to establish international office in Dublin. #idairl”,
There has been much speculation over the past year about Twitter’s interest in Ireland and even a campaign via Twitter to get the social network to choose Ireland.
Barry O’Leary, CEO of IDA Ireland which supported Twitter’s decision to locate in Dublin, described it as a fantastic addition to Ireland’s dynamic digital media cluster. Facebook and LinkedIn also have offices in Dublin, so Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton TD’s comment that this “shows there is real ground for Ireland’s claim to be the internet capital of Europe” is one to nod in agreement to. Or to even get trending.

An Irish company is making a splash across the pond with a new platform which will offer just that.

Called RewardAble, this new platform from Betapond combines social check-ins with near field communication (NFC) and was showcased for the first time at the recent Innovation in Entertainment Showcase in Sony Pictures Hollywood.
RewardAble CEO Declan Kennedy explains that consumers will be able to ‘check in’ on social media and pick up rewards by simply tapping their phone against a poster or scanning a QR code.
The software, which will be available on all smartphones and integrates with NFC technology, will allow customers to discover new ways to get instant rewards whilst also benefiting retailers by bringing customer loyalty to the next level.
NFC authentications means customers will also have the highest level of privacy and protection.

“It’s for anything people log into – web apps, websites,” explains Traynor. “It’s moving to competing on quality of service.” The concept is that human level of contact can’t be left behind and this is where it differs from other CRM tools.
“It’s not enough just to see the messages from your user,” says Traynor. “It lets you get to know your users, greeting them when they log in, exposing certain things about users for example their Twitter account or LinkedIn profile… We tell you everything about them; we group the entire conversation history you have with the user.”
