A BOOMING ad industry has seen an unprecedented demand for staff, with many agencies reporting that they have to look outside Ireland to fill positions.
As a result, wages are increasingly fat and the industry needs to assess how it gets more people to choose a career in the business.
Recruitment company Prosperity, which specialises in media and advertising jobs, says it has noticed a significant increase in the hiring needs of advertising agencies over the last year.
“As agencies become more specialised, be it online, branding or media, there is naturally an increase in the number of agencies,” said Gary Mullan, director of Prosperity. “Add to this the entry of international networks and new niche agencies, and the numbers employed in this sector have grown by up to 65pc over the past five years,” he added.
“Our figures show that last year around 25pc of our business would have come from advertising agencies; this has increased to about 40pc this year, which is a significant increase,” said Mr Mullan.
On the agency side, the company has seen demand for strong client service experience from senior executive to director level.
On the creative side, there is a growing need for art directors, designers and creative directors.
“We are finding now some great candidates who are currently working in the UK and further afield who are interested in relocating to Dublin, and do not have a thorough understanding of who the players are in the market,” he said. As a result, international candidates are more likely to come through the recruitment agencies.
The surging demand has had a knock-on effect on salaries, which are increasing on average at about 8pc. At the top end of the market, an account director can now earn €80,000 to €125,000, according to Prosperity’s annual salary survey - an 8pc increase on last year.
