So Google is going after the Microsoft crown jewels – the browser and its Office Suite.
In the last couple of weeks Google launched its new browser: Chrome.
The big thing about Chrome is that it will be be a platform for more than just web surfing. Google’s big strategy is to promote Word Processing, Spreadsheet, and Business Presentation Apps for free. They can now offer links to these apps in the frame of a browser. There are two major differences to Microsoft Expensive (sorry, Office). Firstly, these apps are free, and secondly, your docs will now become part of the phenonemon called Cloud Computing.
Instead of storing information and installing programs onto our PCs, the future is Cloud – in other words all of your programs and information will be stored out there in digital ether and will be accessible from any device, and from anywhere.
Ok, so who wants to process and store vital information through Web Apps when browsers are so prone to paralysis and tragic death . Well this is why Chrome is Open Source. In other words, let the World do the ironing: Any bugs or kinks will be quickly weeded out by the legions of enthusiastic software developers out there thus making for a highly reliable browser.
One wonders will it be Google who will be generously storing all of our personal files. If so, how could they resist not letting the spiders in to digest so much delicious marketing data? In their Chrome privacy documentation they say something to the effect that they will use information to offer a more enhanced service – the worry is that their definition of enhanced may be somewhat different from yours or mine. This is all purely my own speculation of course – I don’t know where or how this information will be stored. Comments on this would be welcome.
